Documents Required for visiting Mount Kailash
Located at the Burang County, 1300 KM from downtown Lhasa, Mount Kailash is revered as holy mountain by many religions. Mount Kailash is called Gangs Rinpoche in Tibetan language meaning "precious jewel of snows". The name originates from the year-round snow on its peak and its historical religious connections. Mt. Kailash is the highest peak in the massive Gangdise Mountain Range with an altitude over 6,600m (21,654 ft).
If you do not visit Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar during your stay in Tibet, you will be regret for missing the magnificent scenery. For foreign tourists, tourists from Taiwan, Hongkong and Macao, documents required to visit Mount Kailash are different.
What documents are needed for Hong Kong and Macao tourists touring to Mount Kailash?
As Chinese citizens, Hong Kong and Macao tourists only need to provide Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents (Home Return/Visit Permit in short) and Border Pass. Border Pass can be handled in Lhasa within one working day only. Home Visit Permit: The permit is issued by the Bureau of Exit and Entry Administration of the Ministry of Public Security through China Travel Service sub-branches in Hong Kong and Macau and allows holders to travel freely to Mainland China. Border Pass: The certificate for Chinese residents to visit the Tibet border areas, such as the Everest Base Camp in Shigatse and Mount Kailash in Ngari.
What documents are needed for foreigners (including overseas Chinese) touring to Mount Kailash?v Chinese visa: (excluding residents of China's visa exemption countries) It’s the indispensable document for you to enter China. (Please make sure that your visa is valid during your stay in China lest your trip be influenced due to the expired visa) Tibet Travel Permit: Permit for foreigners to enter Tibet. When you board the plane at the airport, you have to offer the original Tibet entry permit.
Alien Travel Permit: Permit for foreign tourists travelling to the border areas of Tibet, such as Everest Base Camp, Mount Kailash and Guge Kingdom Ruins.
What documents are needed for Taiwan tourists touring to Mount Kailash?
Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents, also known as Taiwan Compatriot Permit：a travel document issued by China’s Ministry of Public Security to Chinese Taiwan residents to enter mainland China.
Tibet Travel Permit: Permit for Taiwan residents to enter Tibet. When you board the plane at the airport, you have to offer the original Tibet entry permit.
Alien Travel Permit: Permit for Chinese Taiwan tourists travelling to the border areas of Tibet, such as Everest Base Camp, Mount Kailash and Guge Kingdom Ruins.
Documents required to enter Tibet from Nepal:
Nepal Visa: A permit to enter Nepal.
Tibet Group Visa + Tibet Travel Permit: Foreigners need to apply for Tibet Group Visa Port to enter Tibet from Nepal through Gyirong Port. There is no need to apply for additional Chinese tourist visa.
Alien Travel Permit: Permit for Chinese Taiwan tourists travelling to the border areas of Tibet, such as Everest Base Camp, Mount Kailash and Guge Kingdom Ruins.
What are the steps of handling a Tibet Group Visa?
Step 1: When you arrive in Kathmandu, our local staff help you fill out an application form, collect your original passport and a passport-size photo.
Step 2: The staff hand in relevant documents to the Chinese Embassy in Nepal (must on a working day)
Step 3: The Embassy issues a Tibet Group Visa (must on a working day)
